Burketown hosts the annual Burketown World Barramundi Fishing Competition every Easter long weekend drawing recreational anglers from across the region. The competition is based in the rivers surrounding Burketown notably the  Albert, Nicholson and Leichhardt Rivers. In 2015 it attracted 335 competitors and their families to the region. Flooding and COVID led to the cancellation of the competition in recent years but plans are underway to continue this great tradition.
