Caravans

The Burke Shire Community welcomes our travelling guests. We recommend you schedule a “Down Day” in our town at Burketown and Gregory or at Tirranna Springs Roadhouse, Hell’s Gate Roadhouse or beside the Leichhardt River to sit back and enjoy the view, chill out or take a tour.  Stop in Wugudaji-Adels Grove or Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park and savour the natural beauty of the gulf area.  Go fossicking in Riversleigh World Heritage Area. Take a tour and share the country, history and traditional stories of the Gangalidda people and the Moungibi (Burketown) area.

Burketown Caravan Park is centrally located in the town within walking distance of the shops, pub, café, children’s playground and Morning Glory Park. Enjoy the proximity to other businesses such as Nowland Engineering, where Diesel, Unleaded and LPG Gas are available.  You can restock your pantry from either Nowland Engineering or the Burketown Post Office, both of which have a wide selection of goodies.  Enjoy a pub meal and a cold drink at the Burketown Pub and sample one of Morning Glory Café & Restaurant delicious treats.

The dump point is located out of town next to the Sewerage Treatment Plant – look out for the blue sign on the right side of Wills Developmental Road just out of town.

Gregory Downs Hotel provides a delicious Aussie pub-style meal, which you can eat in or take away to enjoy in your van. The sites are located behind the hotel, next to the river. Diesel only is available from the Hotel. Public Toilets, a playground and a dump point are all located opposite the pub. While you’re in Gregory stop in at Murray’s Place for a world-famous coffee and a freshly baked muffin.

If camping on the Gregory River please make sure you take all your rubbish home. Maximum 7 days of camping for self-contained vehicles in this free area.

Tirranna Spring Roadhouse provides a welcome break from that long drive. Stay the night and enjoy their hospitality. The Roadhouse has fuel, café style food and a range of accommodation options. (some services may not be available due to the 2023 Monsoonal Flood, make sure you call ahead).

Hell’s Gate Roadhouse is the last fuel, water and grocery stop on the Savannah Way as you head toward Borroloola and the Northern Territory. Enjoy some time in this oasis, sit back over a cool drink and meal, stay the night, take a helicopter ride over the gulf or enjoy a tour of the cattle station.

Wugudaji-Adels Grove or Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park offer a range of experiences for the avid traveller. It is located in one of the most scenic places and historically significant sites in the Gulf. Check out their website for all they have to offer.

Doomadgee Supermarket is the only larger supermarket in the district.  It provides a wide range of fresh produce, frozen foods, pantry supplies and numerous essential items.

Driving Tips

  • Caravanning requires more skills and effort than normal driving. Schedule extra rest stops and shorter travelling days to avoid fatigue.
  • Drive to the Road Conditions.  In many areas of Gulf Country, it may not be possible for the van to move off the bitumen.
  • Slow down, not only to take in the views. The added weight and towing a large caravan behind are not speeding-friendly, it can put you in a hazardous situation and increase your fuel consumption. High speed causes your trailer to sway, and braking is more problematic – it can even lead to flipping.
  • Obey the speed limit and strive to drive below to stay on the safe side.
  • Remember the extra length, width and stopping distance required and apply the accelerator and brakes smoothly to avoid swaying.
  • If you are a member of a ‘caravanning convoy’, don’t travel too close together – leave plenty of space between each other. Other road users will become frustrated if they are unable to overtake safely. Trucks and Road Trains find it difficult to overtake slow-moving vehicles.
  • Keep an eye out for Road Trains and give them plenty of room to pass, slow down and stop if necessary.
  • If you are following a caravan, be patient and allow plenty of room before trying to overtake.
  • If you have a UHf CB radio give other users a call on channel 40 to let them know your intentions.
